What to Wear to Color Guard Rehearsal

What to Wear to Color Guard Rehearsal

I definitely drew a blank when trying to decide on an outfit for my first guard meeting.

Depending on your team, the staff may want everyone in uniform, or they might leave it up to the team’s personal preferences.

On both of the teams I participate in we can dress in whatever athletic-ish clothes we want. However, for my winter guard team’s auditions, they requested we all wear black athletic clothes.

If you haven’t been given very clear instructions as far as clothes go, here are some options. Remember to watch the weather, and wear what you’re comfortable in!

Tops

Towards the beginning of the season, I really only wear tank tops. Some are just plain cotton ones, but I’ve also gotten some cute cropped tanks too. I prefer to wear these, because they’re easy to move in, comfortable and I don’t get a farmer’s tan.

Closer to fall, when it gets colder out, I’ll start wearing t-shirts and hoodies. I honestly try to avoid wearing jackets while spinning, because sometimes the sleeves get in the way, but it’s unavoidable when it’s really cold. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Bottoms

When it’s warmer out, I wear some type of athletic shorts. When it’s colder, I wear leggings or sweatpants. If you do wear sweatpants, make sure they’re still flexible.

My biggest piece of advice here: DO NOT WEAR JEANS! Your staff will probably advise you not to, and I’m sure you’ll very much agree after a rehearsal wearing them. They aren’t flexible and you will easily overheat in them.

Shoes

Wear gym shoes! No Converse, Vans, Crocs, Dr. Martens, etc. Don’t ruin your cute sneakers either! Wear a comfy pair of gym shoes.

Hair / Makeup

If your hair is longer, try to pull it out of your face. I usually wear my hair in a pony or a couple braids. With all of the dance and wind in color guard, you’ll want it out of your face.

For makeup, don’t go too full out, and make sure your stuff won’t melt off. Waterproof makeup comes in handy. If it’s sunny out, wear a moisturizer with SPF under your makeup. I usually prefer not to wear makeup to practice, just sunscreen.
