Color Guard Conditioning

Building up the strength and stamina to be in this performance activity requires training. Being able to run around, spin like crazy, and look graceful while performing takes a lot of work.

In my guard teams, we do various conditioning exercises every rehearsal after stretching. Our coaches help us really focus on arms, abs, and legs.

Starting to build strength towards the beginning of the season, and continuing throughout, really helps when shows come around.

Here’s a list of beginner, no-equipment exercises to check out that will help you be a great, strong performer:

Arms

  • Push-ups
  • Arm circles
  • Arm front raises
  • Arm lateral raises
  • Butterfly dips, tricep dips

Abs

  • Plank
  • Crunches, sit-ups
  • Russian twists
  • Leg raises
  • Bicycle crunches

Legs

  • Squats
  • Wall sits
  • Lunges

The amount of reps and the combination of exercises will depend on what you want to focus on. For example, if your arms tend to get tired really quickly when spinning, see what arm exercises help you out.

Targeting all of these groups is important, though, so try to get some variety in each workout.
